Coach Mike Stone
Mike was born and raised in Redondo Beach, CA. He was a three-sport varsity letterman (baseball, football, basketball) at Redondo Union High School. In 1987, he was named the school's Most Valuable Athlete, earning All-CIF honors in both baseball (infielder) and football (defensive back). He broke the single season school record for double plays turned (24), and interceptions (12). A three-year starter as a middle-infielder for coach Harry Jenkins, Mike was a team captain on two nationally ranked teams (1986, #6, USA Today; 1987, #20, Baseball America). On Pioneer League Champion football team, Mike played for current Mira Costa HS (3-time CIF Champion) coach, Don Morrow. He scored 16 touchdowns as a wide receiver during his senior season and was taught valuable lessons about the preparation and toughness required to be a winner. Although recruited on the gridiron by several NCAA Division I universities, Coach Stone chose to solely pursue his lifelong love and passion for the national pastime when his college career began. Like many other standout high school ballplayers in need of further physical development to maximize future potential success , he opted to hone his skills at the highly competitive California community college level. At El Camino College in 1988, his athletic ability earned him a starting spot as an outfielder for a Warrior squad that had more wins than any other since 1959. His successful transition to the new position was recognized with an honorable mention All-South Coast Conference selection. In 1989, Stone transferred to LA Harbor College to play for Jim O'Brien as his starting shortstop. He hit .375 on the season and was a 1st Team All-South Coast Conference & All-Southern California selection, leading the Seahawks to an appearance in the State Championship. Stone accepted an offer to play the 1990 season for San Francisco State University, where he became the Gators' starting centerfielder. He hit .357 with 20 stolen bases, 49 runs scored, and had a 23 game hitting streak. Those numbers proved sufficient to earn him 2nd Team All-Conference honors. A torn rotator cuff injury put Mike out of commission for the 1991 season. With one year of eligibility remaining, he contemplated signing a professional free agent contract with an independent club or returning to SFSU for his senior campaign. Then Mike received an unexpected phone call from his high school mentor, Coach Jenkins. In the 1991 off-season, Harry decided to end his two-year retirement from coaching high school baseball to accept the Skipper position at West Torrance High School Harry was quickly assembling a staff of savvy and seasoned coaches to help establish a solid winning foundation built on the tradition he had established at RUHS. Mike was asked to be a part of the Warriors' coaching staff and he accepted. From then until 2004 he became "Coach Stone", a distinction he knew would be his calling in the game of baseball. During those 14 years on the West Torrance staff, Stone was both the Frosh/Soph head coach and a Varsity assistant. Along the way he was influential in the development of many great players, some of which would go on to become coaches themselves - Shane Shchumaker, Derek Nicholson (LA Harbor Head Coach), Josh Bendik, Tony Cosentino, John Lockhart, Joel Weeks, Justin Su'a (BYU), Tony Cabral, Greg Sain (San Diego Padres), Grady Sain (South Torrance Head Coach), James Garcia (SF Giants), Nelson Caraballo (Pepperdine) to name a few. Since 2004, Stone has been away from the game while working in the Insurance and Real Estate industry. His presence may have been away, but his heart and mind always remained on the diamond though Coach Stone is well-rounded in all aspects of the game of baseball. He specializes in hitting, infield play, and baserunning, but is not limited to those skills. He can also instruct on pitching techniques and mentality, catching, outfield play, bunting, picking signs, physical fitness training, defensive footwork, and hand-eye coordination improvement. Any player seeking to improve his all-around game will gain valuable knowledge from working with Mike. Perhaps most importantly, a player will gain insight on the manner by which the game of baseball must be approached in order to be successful on a long-term consistent basis. He teaches what it takes to win. Mike is extremely excited and enthusiast to join the South Bay Surf coaching staff. He looks forward to a long term relationship with his fellow staff members, and toward developing positive relationships with the players and parents. |
